A small number of Senate Republicans joined Democrats to advance a resolution that would limit future U.S. military action in Venezuela unless Congress gives approval. The move comes after President Trump ordered military action that resulted in Nicolás Maduro being removed from power.

In an unexpected turn, five Republican senators voted alongside all Senate Democrats to push the measure forward. The resolution is expected to reach a full Senate vote next week, where it will need at least 51 votes to pass. However, it must still go through the amendment process, and its final outcome remains uncertain.

The resolution, initially backed by Democrats and co-sponsored by Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, aims to force lawmakers to publicly take a position on the administration’s actions. The vote highlights Congress asserting its checks-and-balances role over presidential war powers as tensions continue to rise in Venezuela.
